IS THERE A PLACE FOR CLICKBAITING?
As we stated earlier, this isn’t a diatribe against the very existence of clickbait. Rather, we believe that there’s a time and a place for it. The big social-focused sites like Buzzfeed have built their name on this stuff, and their readers (if we can call them that) expect it – and even encourage it. Legitimate news outlets, however, should not resort to clickbait tactics. Check out this example posted by The Independent during the Sydney siege in December 2014:
Using cheap tricks like clickbaiting in the context of true tragedy is, at least in our opinion, a highly questionable editorial decision.
