Vedanta Resources is a mining company with a dreadful approach to human rights. A lot of UK public money is invested there, but a good part of it has been withdrawn because of the human rights issues.
Anil Agarwal, the owner of Vedanta, sees himself as a devotee of Lord Krishna, and gives a lot of money to the Hare Krishnas (officially Iskcon, the International Society for Krishna Consciousness.)
He has used this religious connection to buy the Oriya state government and land in Orissa which has belonged to the temple there for centuries. The land is supposed to be for a university, but, not totally surprisingly, it also contains a lot of resources. (sources later, sorry!)
The Krishnas don’t care where their money comes from and are happy to support this. Now they have opened a state school in London, where Anil Agarwal is not just giving money but also on the board – and above he is pictured with the queen at the opening.
Oh I don’t even know why I still bother. I just think this is all completely shocking.
